Applications are being accepted for the next training class which will begin in March 2012. (See tentative schedule below - subject to change.) It is not too early to begin the application process. Please fill out the application (above) and e-mail or fax (646-0624) to Jana Blue, Volunteer Coordinator.
Richmond CASA volunteers undergo a thorough 35-hour training course which includes 30 hours of in-class interaction as well as 5 hours of courtroom observation. Volunteers learn effective advocacy techniques for children and are educated about specific topics including the law, the child protection system, cultural competence and sensitivity, understanding substance abuse and mental health issues, understanding poverty and domestic violence, and child development. The CASA volunteer will learn about the court system, investigating and collecting information, report writing and effective communication. Ultimately, the CASA volunteer will learn how to focus on the needs of the child and be an effective voice for that child in court.
Here are the tentative Spring 2012 training dates. All volunteers in training must attend all class sessions.
